Yes, some designs are free. Please email me and tell me a little more about your project. Do you need AutoCAD plans, changes, etc.?
Hello Owen,
I am working on a project to build an ecotourism resort on the coast in Haiti using earth bags (eco, minimalist, chic). Part of the project is not only eco, but also agro, cultural, and community development (the model is based on the UNs Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria).
My husband is Haitian, and we have been working on the concept for quite sometime. I would like to use earthbag homes for several reasons. 1) It is durable, sustainable, low impact on the environment 2) The locals can learn from helping to build the resort, and part of our model includes facilitating regenerative community growth through developing local economies. The idea is to then have these group of local builders continue building similar structures in their communities. It would be a small business owned by the local builders, and then it creates sustainable housing. 3) I think it is a great concept to have the ecoresort be constructed out of materials that they too can build with. Minimizing the “us vs them factors” that often comes with tourism.
Your designs and work is humbling. I really like this concept, and the cluster lodging concept as well. I am not rich nor am I trying to become rich. I am trying to create opportunities for Haitians, over come negative stereotypes about Haiti, and use ecotourism to facilitate community growth in Haiti.
I was wondering if you could help in the physical design of the resort. The idea would be to have 4 of these constructed with 4 of the clustered built (with a common earthbag “bath house”), and a main building for a lobby, conference/creative space, kitchen, and small bathroom. It would be nice if the overall design was cohesive. I would like to appeal to a wide customer base. Like the look of this (I found this on your website)https://earthbagbuilding.wordpress.com/2010/12/10/witch%e2%80%99s-rock-surf-camp-in-costa-rica/ minus the pool and concrete, smaller porch, and no fancy furniture.
I would also like to incorporate environmental efficiency with solar panels, gray water systems for the sink and shower, rain water collection for the shower and sink water, and an eco septic system for the toilet (ie http://www.biokube.co.uk/how_it_works.html or http://presbyeco.com/). This organization has some great ideas in regards to the environmental aspects, but I really like the earthbag designs/concept and your plans http://www.haitihousingcollaborative.org/images/final4/hhc2-large.jpg. Their are so many rice sacks from the aid in Haiti, that it just makes sense to build like this right now.
I would appreciate any help, insight, plans, etc. that you can provide.
Thank you,
Alicia Marseille

I just emailed you. Sounds like a wonderful project!
Hello Owen,
I’m in charge of a tiny church community in the woods of WV. We do everything ourselves, from scratch. We provide shelter, rehab, meals and life skills training for those in need, who are willing to work hard to make beneficial personal changes, rebuilding their life with their own hands, away from toxic influences. We need more living space, greenhouse and workshop area, but don’t have any budget and very little skilled labor at this time. These earth bag houses seem perfect. We do have goat feed sacks, plenty of clay dirt, and everyone knows how to dig. We can’t afford to purchase house plans. Is there a way we can get something like this vacation cottage house plan for free? It would help us so much. Thank you.
Luciana
