How this building should be oriented in order to make passive solar design working?
The floorplan is oriented so the top of the drawing (kitchen/bath) is north, the bottom (living room) is south. (All of my plans are drawn this way, with a north arrow.) This orientation provides decent solar gain, while minimizing windows on the west to prevent overheating. This design also provides a sheltered space on the east to escape the afternoon heat and wind. Always adjust roof overhangs to match the building site.
