We just love the plans you create! Have a question. My husband and I love the old round barns. Would it be possible to increase the size of this to 40 or 50 feet diameter. We have alot of children and could use the extra space as a B&B when they got older. Could we do a traditional roof like metal?? Also if we could use our own wood from the property, would it still be possible to keep this around $10 / sq foot? Would there be a max Hight on this? Thanks!!
Thanks. You could go to a larger diameter with added support: buttresses, connecting to interior shear walls, post and beam, rebar reinforcing.
Most any type of roof will work, yes.
One story works best with earthbags because it’s very labor intensive to raise tons of soil high up on a wall. Better to make a larger diameter than go two stories (unless the 2nd story is say lightweight framing and then it’s okay).
$10/foot is only possible if you go to extremes — use local soil, do your own labor, find recycled bags, use recycled materials whenever possible, earthen plaster on the interior, etc. and have few or no codes.
I was wondering about the option of putting the Bathroom sink & toilet under the stairs (in that order from the shorter end so as not to bump your head) then moving the window over a smidge to also put in a shower & that would allow room @ the squared off end for a Washer & Dryer. Seems by doing this you would also give additional support to the stairs while using all the space.
Homeowners often make small changes like this.
